The Instinct Edge kitesurfing kite is an aptly named kite, for riders that like riding hard on the rail and at the edge of their limits. This higher aspect wing is not only fast, it develops a tremendous amount of energy. It’s up to you to choose where to direct that power, keep it in front of you and speed records are likely to break, send it vertical and you just might lose your stomach.

Choose your passion ~ Choose your style. Be warned though, this kite is for advanced and expert riders that are looking for a quick kite with incredible lift and hang-time.

The high aspect ratio plan form of the Edge, the 7 narrow diameter struts and progressive leading edge give the Edge its higher performance characteristics. These design features make for a faster, more aerodynamic kite which gives the Edge more POWER. This power can be utilized to create direct-line speed or massive lift.

The Edge will change the definition of getting air easy. As the Sport is a superb all-round, freestyle, free-ride kite, the Edge adds even more! It does everything you do on the Sport yet twice as fast, twice as high and twice as long! Speed, hang-time and height are the keywords for this design.

The Edge’s design keeps within the feel of the Instinct family, with its gust control and huge wind range yet it has the potential to take the rider to the next level and beyond. With the ability to spend more time in the air the rider will have more time to master tricks, hooked in or unhooked. For those interested in full on speed, the Edge will see you reaching that 50knot barrier.

To achieve maximum performance from the kite, the Edge utilizes individual strut inflation, to maintain optimum pressure in the canopy. The tiny volume of the struts and the self seal valves mean for very fast pumping times and ensures the Edge performs as designed.

  • No Pulleys in the kite or the bar
  • Easy relaunch
  • Total yet smooth progressive depower –the experts preference

  • 07 Bar design with integrated flag out safety and O-Shit handle
  • New pump for 07 with pressure meter
  • Bullet Proof Construction
  • Aerodynamic scuff pads on LE
  • 7m, 9m, 11m, 13m

The Edge is a kite for more advanced riders who may have a certain arm position they prefer or who can adjust the lines to suit their harness or riding style.

The Ozone team have over 15 years of paragliding design and manufacturing experience which results in amazing craftsmanship and stress management, accurate stitching only where necessary. Self Rescue handles, Anti scuff pads and Strut base reinforcement are all visible here

Keeping the leading edge ultra light but at the same time protecting the structural stitching, these Dacron anti scuff pads ensure that the leading edge stitching remains intact when the kite is dragged along the ground during self launch or landing. A light weight leading edge is the key to an aerodynamic kite’s performance. No battens and no lumpy, drag inefficient heavy scuff pads ensure this.

The Instinct’s tip has been designed with water relaunch and turning speed in mind, it is more swept and the Y bridle configuration ensures the power from the back lines is applied to the correct part of the tip during the turn to keep the power constant and direct. The turn is initiated at the bottom of the tip, creating a faster reaction time, then, as the kite moves through the turn, the power is smoothed out and comes from further up the tip until it reaches the top of the bridle. No pulleys here mean DIRECT TIP STEERING.

Things to note on the Edge – well, first it is fast, second it jumps high. The thing is, you need to understand this is not a Sport, it is an Edge, and so some things are a bit different. First the depower. What you may find is that because you are going so fast, when you release the bar, it feels like nothing has changed, as though you still have the same power. Then you look at the kite and realizes it is flagged out, so there must be less power. Thing is, the faster you are moving, the longer it takes to slow down and to loose the energy. So on the Edge, you need to think and plan about a second earlier than on a Sport, so the kite, your board and you have time to slow down. Some people will think the kite doesn’t depower enough, but it does, as along as you understand the speed issue!

Review of the Ozone Instinct Edge Kitesurfing Kite by Pedro Fernandes

After receiving the good news from Kitesurfeolis, official distributor of the Ozone kites in Portugal, to be part of the team in order to promote the brand in Portugal I was anxious to try the kites as soon as I received them.

After a forced pause of 6 months for a knee injury, this was one of the best news that left me motivated to get back in the water and practice some Freestyle and waves.

With the wind conditions of Alvor it was in the following day after the delivery of the kites that I tried them.

For the first tests I made use of the kites Instinct Sport 13m and Edge 9m.
Both kites have an excellent construction noticing itself how much the Ozone cares about all the details of the kites. They present handles of self-rescue, bridles in the leading edge where connects the fifth line and anti-invert system (when in the water).

The system of depower in the bar is sufficiently easy to use in contrast of what it happens with some kites with a great depower. The Sport is the only model with one-pump that makes the kite really practical. In both models water relaunch is really easy, being necessary only to pull one of the back lines. The kites being no bows, but fifth line hybrids don’t have the same depower of a bow what to me is great.
The Ozone in these kites managed to eliminate the back-stall and with the stability that they have it’s excellent to ride un-hooked (especially the Sport).

Instinct Edge 9m

First Experience (and only so far…): Being about 20 knots I decided to try the kite and thus I grab the bar I realized it was a fast kite although not as fast as the Sport. In the water the kite is fast but easy to control, it is a high AR kitetherefore it jumps massively high and with a good hangtime. This kite advances sufficiently in the wind window compared with the Instinct Sport. The pressure in the bar is a little less than in the Sport model.
After some time ridding in the lagoon in flat water we decided to go to the sea with offshore wind and the conditions were perfect to try handle-passes, kung-fus and old school moves. Unhappily my old leash broke and I had to swim 500m to the beach… Happily some friends were there and helped me to get back the kite again…

Although not yet 100% confidence about my knee, these kites made a part of this confidence come back. The motivation of kitesurfing is back and now it’s time to practice and to have Fun everytime I’m in the water.

At this moment we have no wind and I am anxious to receive the Sport 9m and 7m to be able to try them.

Review from an unknown magazine editor

The Edge is growing a serious fan base around the globe; take for example the email below we have just received! Unfortunately the author needs to remain anonymous as she is a journalist for one of the Worlds leading Kitesurfing Mags so “author’s name withheld since this review could get her in trouble with her editors” But those of you in the Bay Area, san Francisco will surely know.

Cheers
Team Ozone

“That’s got to be marketing hype,” my husband John said to me after reading Ozone designer David Pilkington’s assessment of the Instinct Edge. “This is the closest to paragliding on a kite that I have ever come!” wrote David.  “The kite flies when you jump it, super soft landings possible. Big, big grins when I finish a session on an Edge.” I must admit, I wasn’t sure I entirely believed David either. That is, until I watched John take the 13m Edge for a test ride.

The first jump said it all: he more than doubled the max height he was getting on our other kites. That’s when the hooting began. I rode up behind him to see if his jump was due to some kind of freak gust, but the excited look in his eyes told me otherwise. I followed him around all afternoon, watching him orbit over our local site, jumping significantly higher than all the other riders. He tried riding fast and sending the kite, which catapulted him over 20 feet high. Then he tried riding really slowly to set up his jump, and he went just as high. That’s when the kite looping began. He sent forward and back loops while hovering 15 feet in the air - I have never seen a kite loop keep the rider so stationary during a jump. It was truly extraordinary.

After two hours of riding, I called it quits and went in, but John was having so much fun dialing in the kite that he stayed out for a marathon session. While I sat on the bench watching him boost higher and higher, a small crowd of friends gathered. I told them about David’s comments about the kite and that we were initially questioning whether what he said was true. Just then, John shot out of the water and floated 24 feet above us. We all laughed and cheered, and one friend turned to me and said, “That’s no BS! If that guy David wants to sell you a bridge, buy it.”

Two hours later, John came in off the water with a gigantic, silly grin. His only comment was this: “You’re not allowed to give this kite back.” Even though he was smiling and laughing, he was dead serious. He hadn’t had this much fun on a kite in years, and there was no way he’d let that fun stop.

Our new quiver of Instinct Edge kites arrives this weekend, and I can’t wait to ride them. That’s when the fun will really begin.
