The Instinct Sport klitesurfing kite is the 2nd generation of the original Instinct, offering the ultimate kite for all riders in all conditions. While it keeps the same concepts of its instigator this new breed is refined and rebuilt to offer even more. We reduced the overall weight and dropped from 7 to 5 struts while still maintaining that legendary Instinct stability.

A new plan form along with reshaping the leading edge and wing tips, all adding to a more powerful and faster turning kite. It still excels unhooked, still loves the gusts and keeps its huge ‘One Kite’ wind range.

The feedback from the Original Instinct is amazing. Still, we sought to improve upon it and absorbed all of the input from riders around the world. We are proud to say that this year the reverse launch is much improved, especially in lighter winds. Compared with the previous Instinct, you will also notice thinner struts and a completely new wingtip shape.

The Instinct Sport has a progressive curve across the leading edge which is more swept than the original. The Y bridle back line configuration ensures the power from the back lines is applied to the correct part of the tip during the turn to keep the power constant and direct. The turn is initiated at the bottom of the tip, creating a faster reaction time, then, as the kite moves through the turn, the power is smoothed out and comes from further up the tip until it reaches the top of the bridle. Again, No Pulleys in the kite = equals more DIRECT TIP STEERING and that good ole Ozone feel.

The Sport comes with the “One-Pump” inflation system to maximize efficiency and get you on the water quicker. Simply pump air into the leading edge and the entire kite inflates together simultaneously. The One-Pump system has clips to shut off pressure to individual struts, which is recommended to isolate each strut once inflated. Ozone has implanted neoprene covers over the clips and connection points to protect them during use and when packed away. This simple yet effective device can be rolled back when using the clip and then replaced to guard it. Ozone is a License payee of the Patent approved One-pump system

The speed range that it can be used over is also larger, but this means that people need to know that they will be using the trim line more than on last years kite. Basically, at slow setting (trimmer off) the kite has the maximum amount of power, perfect for starting in lighter winds, but less depower in the bar. Pull the trimmer on say 5cm as the wind increases and the kite will have slightly less power, but more speed, more depower in the bar and will suddenly go 10 degrees further upwind (15 degrees for the Edge!).

Comparing the power of the Old Instinct and the Sport; a Sport 11m pulls more than last years 11m for sure. This is also helped by the better turning of the new one. Again something people who own the old one might need to know if they look to fill in there existing sizes.

It can take a little while for the struts to get to the same pressure as the leading edge, so leave the clips open for a while before closing them. BUT they must be closed before riding the kite. Two reasons for this, first so if a strut bladder bursts, you don’t loose pressure in the front tube ( i.e. the whole kite!), but also second because otherwise the kite will behave in a very, very strange way when you fly it! If you leave the clips open, then as the kite moves in the air and the stresses push on the front tube, then the air gets squeezed from the front in to the struts, making the front very soft. In that situation, you need to get back to shore to close them again.

Review of the Ozone Instinct Sport Kitesurfing Kite by Pedro Fernandes

After receiving the good news from Kitesurfeolis, official distributor of the Ozone kites in Portugal, to be part of the team in order to promote the brand in Portugal I was anxious to try the kites as soon as I received them.

After a forced pause of 6 months for a knee injury, this was one of the best news that left me motivated to get back in the water and practice some Freestyle and waves.

With the wind conditions of Alvor it was in the following day after the delivery of the kites that I tried them.

For the first tests I made use of the kites Instinct Sport 13m and Edge 9m.

Both kites have an excellent construction noticing itself how much the Ozone cares about all the details of the kites. They present handles of self-rescue, bridles in the leading edge where connects the fifth line and anti-invert system (when in the water).

The system of depower in the bar is sufficiently easy to use in contrast of what it happens with some kites with a great depower. The Sport is the only model with one-pump that makes the kite really practical. In both models water relaunch is really easy, being necessary only to pull one of the back lines. The kites being no bows, but fifth line hybrids don’t have the same depower of a bow what to me is great.

The Ozone in these kites managed to eliminate the back-stall and with the stability that they have it’s excellent to ride un-hooked (especially the Sport).

Instinct Sport 13m

First Experience (about 12 knots): Not being used to big kites with light bar pressure my first contact was a bit strange but in a short time I got the feeling and the timing of the kite. I found an excellent light wind kite, being the only one that could go up-wind easy, jumping and making some kiteloops and powered moves with good pop.

Second Experience: Seeming that it was light wind I only took instinct 13m for the beach and when I arrived there I noticed there were good conditions for my 9m… Anyway I decided to try the 13m so I could feel how it holds in stronger winds (about 20 gusty knots). Although this kite is really good in light winds it presents a great and sufficient depower and with almost 20 knots I was only overpower in couple of situations. The kite jumps really, really high and in this day I gave the biggest jump of my life. I could manage to do some high handle-passes and  some kiteloops (only when the gust passed This kite for a 13m is a very fast kite managing good pop for un-hooked moves. A great day with some of the “Mens of Alvor crew” LOL.
